Of Course Deadpool 2 Is Using The Unicorn To Help Sell The Movie

Sure, King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are both currently riding high on the blockbuster success of Black Panther, but there's a less refined Marvel character who will also hit the big screen this year, as well. That's right, we're talking about Wade Wilson and the highly-anticipated release of David Leitch's Deadpool 2. There's a lot of fan enthusiasm to see what gags will return from the original Deadpool, and now it looks like Deadpool 2's marketing already features Wade's beloved stuffed unicorn. Check out a Deadpool 2 promotional stand-up featuring the animal, below.

Pretty adorable, right? Well, it's cute if you don't know the unicorn in question's significance to Wade Wilson. As fans of the original film likely already know, that is the unicorn that The Merc with the Mouth keeps with him when he goes to his room to masturbate after a long day of butchering bad guys. It's already being included the marketing for Deadpool 2, which appears to imply there will be no shortage of lewd jokes this time around -- not that we ever had any doubts about that to begin with. This is Deadpool we're talking about, after all.

The return of the stuffed unicorn could merely be a joke used to sell Deadpool 2 to audiences, but it is also entirely possible that there's some more profound significance to it. Specifically, we already know that Cable (Josh Brolin) will keep a stuffed teddy bear on his utility belt through a portion of the movie, and the motif of stuffed animals could ultimately turn out to be one of the things that brings these two musclebound badasses together. Given how much the Deadpool franchise thrives by subverting action genre expectations, this would make plenty of sense.

With all of that said, superherocomedy's picture of a Deadpool 2 cardboard poster still leaves us with a few unanswered questions about Wade Wilson's special alone time. Chief among those pressing issues is whether or not he still has his Crocs a.k.a his "big, rubber masturbating shoes." In the world of Deadpool, this is vital information.

Audiences will get to see Ryan Reynolds bring his knack for smartass comments back to the big screen as Wade Wilson later this year when Deadpool 2 premieres on May 18. Why Adam McKay Felt He Could Lean Into His Sillier Instincts Making Vice

While Adam McKay's movies are certainly more serious than they used to be, he also has clearly not lost his sense of humor. He may be tackling issues like the subprime mortgage crisis and the political ascension of Dick Cheney, but he tells those stories with a special light tough and some surprisingly big laughs. It's kind of a strange mix, but the filmmaker partially believes it's because of the tone of the times we live in that he can pull it off:

The big trick is, and you know this, is just we're living in Bonkers Town right now... So we felt like with Cheney, who's this dark mystery, who's done everything he can for his story not to be told --Dick Cheney does not want a movie made about him. And we felt like we had to show the absurdity of that. We had to show the tragedy of that. We had to have everything.

Adam McKay's particular tonal balance was an especially important aspect in my personal appreciation of the film, so I felt that I had to bring it up when I sat down with the writer/director earlier this month at the Los Angeles press day for Vice. I asked about his philosophy and approach to the new denser material, and his approach towards placing those aforementioned touches, and he explained that the world kind of did the work for him in that regard. It's both ridiculous and insane that one of the most powerful figures in modern politics can wear the shield around him that he does, and that blend told McKay how to tell the story.

Going further, there is no question that the humor also makes the material a great deal more digestible than if it were presented as straight, serious drama. It's specifically why The Big Short has Margot Robbie and Anthony Bourdain cameo to entertainingly explain complex financial terms, but also why Vice has Dick and Lynne Cheney's discussions about taking on the Vice Presidency spoken in Shakespearean verse. Adam McKay gets to have his cake and eat it too: still exercising his comedic impulses and sensibilities, while also whipping some need-to-know history at his audience.

All in all, Adam McKay basically thinks that the world has changed enough in recent years that this kind of filmmaking can thrive. We don't need to put things in specific boxes anymore, and instead movies can mix it up. Making Vice he found himself both laughing and crying throughout, and he gives a lot of credit to the atmosphere in which the film was made and is being released. Said McKay,

Our conceit was we're in a post-genre world. There is no genre anymore once your president tells you to rake the woods. That's kind of what got us there. So this is the weirdest movie in the sense that I will watch this movie on playback and I swear to God there are times where I have tears in my eyes by the end. And then there are other times where I laugh the entire way through the movie. All I can say is we're in very strange times.

Considering that Steve Trevor died during Wonder Womans climactic third act, needless to say that there were many people surprised to learn that hes back in Wonder Woman 1984. We still dont have any official details about how the pilot is both alive and still looking youthful over 60 years after World War I, but for those wondering if this means Steve will be sticking around the DC Extended Universe afterwards, Chris Pine says that Wonder Woman 1984 will be the last time he plays the character. In Pines words:

I think Steve's done. I think Steve's done his bit. I wish them all the luck in the world.

Since Wonder Woman 1984 was recently pushed back from fall 2019 to summer 2020 (its now following four months after Birds of Prey), we have an even longer wait ahead of us to learn whats going on with Steve Trevor in the sequel. However, when asked on if Steve could be involved with Wonder Woman 3, Chris Pine told ET that Wonder Woman 1984 is likely to be his final outing as the character.

Director and writer Patty Jenkins already has clear plans for Wonder Woman 3 should that get the green light, and considering her close professional relationship with Chris Pine (they also worked together on the TNT limited series I Am The Night), presumably shes already clued the actor in on what said plans are, hence his comment. It is possible things could change later down the line, but for now, Pine sounds like hes made peace with leaving Steve Trevor behind.

Of course, those whove seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League shouldnt be shocked to learn that Steve Trevor isnt in Diana of Themysciras life post-1984. This wasnt expressly stated in Batman v Superman since that movie came out over a year before Wonder Woman, but since it was set a century after World War I, naturally it was assumed hed died a long time ago. Then in Justice League, which came out five months after Wonder Woman, Diana expressly talked about Steve and how she lost him.

At the time of Justice Leagues release, we assumed Diana was indirectly referring to how Steve Trevor sacrificed himself aboard that plane to destroy Doctor Poisons deadly gas in Wonder Woman, but now we know that she has one last encounter with him in Wonder Woman 1984. Again, we dont know how Steve has popped up in 1984 and what hell be doing, although Patty Jenkins has assured fans that this indeed Steve and not someone in disguise, a hallucination, etc. That leaves resurrection on the table, and since Wonder Woman 1984 is pulling from the mystical/mythical realm like its predecessor, its easy enough to imagine powerful forces being harnessed to bring Steve back, and in era-appropriate attire no less!

Part of me hopes that Patty Jenkins finds a loophole to bring Chris Pine back for Wonder Woman 3, specifically by pulling a page from the Wonder Woman TV series book and having Pine play one of Steve Trevors descendants. Im not sure how that would work since Steve didnt mention having any children in Wonder Woman, and presumably he wont have much time to form a meaningful relationship with anyone new in Wonder Woman 1984, but just like how Lyle Waggoner played Steve Trevor Sr. and Jr. in the Lynda Carter-led show, it would be amusing to see Pine keep that trend going on the big screen.

If Steve Trevor does manage to conceive a son during Wonder Woman 1984, that means that Steve Jr. (or whatever he would be named) would be close to Chris Pines actual age. So if Wonder Woman 3 is set in the present, then it would be easy enough to have Diana cross paths with Steve Jr. Maybe hes an agent of ARGUS like his comic book counterpart, or maybe hes in another line of government/military work. Either way, imagine the surprise on Dianas face to learn that not only did the man she once loved have a son, but he looks just like his father. But hey, that wouldnt be the weirdest thing to happen in the DCEU.

While we last saw Wonder Woman in the present day deciding to become a public superheroine after defeating Steppenwolf alongside Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, her sequel adventure opted to wind the clock back to when she was still keeping a low profile relatively speaking. All we know so far about Wonder Woman 1984 is that it will involve Diana coming into conflict with the Soviet Union during the waning days of the Cold War. In the midst of that, shell clash with Kristen Wiigs Barbara Ann Minerva, a.k.a. The Cheetah, one of Wonder Womans most iconic foes from the comics.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, Wonder Woman 1984s cast also includes Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright reprising Hippolyta and Antiope, respectively, as well as Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Kristoffer Polaha and Oakley Bull in undisclosed roles (although it has been theorized that Pascal is playing Maxwell Lord). In addition to stepping back in the directors chair, Patty Jenkins co-wrote the script with Geoff Johns and David Callaham.

It will be a while until we learn if Wonder Woman 3 is happening, but if Wonder Woman 1984 is anywhere near as critically and commercially successful as Wonder Woman, no doubt Warner Bros will give it the go-ahead, especially since Jenkins has indicated that the threequel would end her incarnation of the character. It would be weird not having Steve Trevor around since hes an integral part of the Wonder Woman mythology, but were lucky that were being treated to a second appearance from him next year.

Wonder Woman 1984 is now set for release on June 5, 2020, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage.
