One Incredibles Side Character Who Almost Had A Bigger Role In Incredibles 2

This might be a very mild spoiler for Incredibles 2. You have been warned!

One big challenge, when a filmmaker agrees to do a sequel, is figuring out how to bring every popular character back. It has to make sense in the context of the story, and shouldn't just pander to the fan base. Remember how much you liked "Fill-in-the-blank" character? Well, here's their glorified cameo! Brad Bird faced this issue when reviving The Incredibles after a 14 year absence, planning to set Incredibles 2 mere minutes after the original movie ended. And during a recent press day at Pixar, when Bird was asked about the characters in his sequel, he revealed that we ALMOST were going to see Frozone's wife, Honey, in person in the upcoming Incredibles 2... but for a good reason, they opted against it. Bird explained:

We wanted to show Honey in this movie. We didn't end up doing it, because it's funnier as a voice. So we actually went through all the trouble of designing the character and the design appears in the movie, but not as Frozone's wife. ... We have used her design, and she is a hero. There's not a lot of screentime, though. The problem is, we have a lot of different things that we want the movie to be about, and we're already, the two Incredibles movies are already the longest movies at Pixar, and they are never happy about that!

Honey is a voice off camera in the original movie. It has become a beloved bit, with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) shouting to his wife, wondering where his super suit is. Here, catch up with it again. It's still funny, nearly 15 years later. "I am the greatest good you are ever going to get!'

The scene is called back to in the most recent Incredibles 2 trailer, as well. The clip ends on a similar interaction, with Frozone rushing to get into his suit "ASAP." And we hear Honey's voice, lecturing her brow-beaten spouse that he better "be back ASAP." This is not the look of a man who is pleased to hear Honey's voice!

The question asked of Brad Bird at the Incredibles 2 press day at Pixar was about seeing more diversity and representation in the world of these super-powered beings. And so Bird wanted to make it clear that while he considered bringing Honey into the light, they ultimately decided against it, because the joke is funnier as being an off-camera voice.

However, it's encouraging to hear that they designed the look of the character, and then used her on a different hero. We reported earlier that Brad Bird and his team will use Incredibles 2 to introduce all new heroes, some of them going by the name of the Wannabes. I wonder if the Honey design made its way onto one of those character

Three's a lot of odd, strange, and bizarre stuff going on in Jordan Peele's new film Us. However, one of the strangest things has to be the movie's opening scene. The film opens on a little girl watching television in the 1980s. Specifically, she views a commercial for the 1986 fundraising event Hands Across America. The ad isn't entirely random, as the event has a part to play in the larger story of Us. In fact, it sort of sets the tone for the entire movie, which is apparently why Jordan Peele decided to open the movie with it.

In addition to the Hands Across America commercial being important to the plot of Us, it also mirrors the film itself, because while the ad wants to be full of hope and optimism, Jordan Peele actually had a very different reaction to it. It seems that ultimately, it was the commercial which helped the writer and director figure out what he wanted to do with the movie, which is why he decided to open the film with it. Old creepy commercials also come up in both, ones from the 80s. In conceiving this movie, I arrived at the Hands Across America commercial from one of these moments of feeling as opposed to thinking. I found a real Hands Across America commercial I dont know what I was searching to find it, but I just had this feeling of dread watching the amusing, bright optimism on display. It took me back to a time where I was also afraid and young and vulnerable, and didnt really know what was going on. So I probably said, what if this was the first scene in the movie? And that began to answer questions about what I was working towards.

I'm old enough to remember the actual Hands Across America, but I'm never going to be able to think about it the same way again thanks to Us. The unwavering optimism of it all is almost terrifying, which is part of the point. Everything looks good but there's a feeling of something wrong underneath, which is exactly was Us is trying to say.

The first part of Us takes place in 1986, the same year that Hands Across America took place, but as we learn later in the movie, the commercial wasn't simply set to help set the time and place. The actual event has a part to play. Based on what Jordan Peele tells Polygon, it sounds like connecting his story to Hands Across America helped him figure out where to take the characters in his script, as he'd still had some questions previously.

It was certainly a unique and interesting way to open a movie, not to mention effective. The choice to use the commercial makes the audience wonder just what they're seeing and why, throwing them a little off balance for the story that is to come.

Has there ever been a human being as utterly charming and instantly likable as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? The wrestler-turned-blockbuster movie star continually brings joy to people on screen and off (people not named Vin Diesel, at least), showing how a little kindness and recognition can mean so much to someone. In his latest example of winning hearts and minds in advance of his eventual presidential run, The Rock surprised a teenager over her high school loudspeaker, announcing that he had bought out a theater for her and her friends to go see his new movie Rampage. You can really see the complete disbelief on her face when she and her classmates hear this message from The Great One. Everyone is so excited and her tears of joy upon realizing who it is and hearing her name is great. It undoubtedly meant a lot to her that Dwayne Johnson would do this, and it's awesome that The Rock took to Twitter also to give her a little extra love. This was also a super cool way for The Rock to announce this gesture to Katie Kelzenberg. I don't even remember if we had regular morning announcements in high school, much less their content, and I'm pretty sure none of them were exciting. The Rock could have just contacted her on social media, but giving her that moment out of the blue surrounded by her peers made it unforgettable.

If you're wondering how this came about, as Dwayne Johnson explained on his Instagram, the high schooler, named Katie Kelzenberg, a self-described Rock superfan, was trying to get The Rock to be her date to prom. Unfortunately, The Rock will be in Hawaii shooting the Jungle Cruise movie the weekend of the prom, so he can't make it. But because he's The Rock and never wants to disappoint his fans, he decided to rent out a local theater for Katie and her family and friends to go see Rampage. He also paid for all the popcorn, candy and drinks that the guests could want. Renting out a theater is one thing, but have you seen concession prices, Rocky? You better keep those blockbusters coming, because that bill is going to be steep.

I honestly don't know how Dwayne Johnson manages to shoot all his movies and TV shows, lift all the weights and still find time to record personalized messages to his young fans like this. He must have a time-turner or something. It's really amazing how often Dwayne Johnson goes above and beyond, taking his time and money and doing things he doesn't have to just to brighten someone's day and build that relationship he has with his fans. This isn't even the first Rampage-related kindness Dwayne Johnson has done recently. At a special screening of the movie, The Rock sang "Happy Birthday" to a 12-year old kid who was in attendance.
