Why Joss Whedon Has Left DC's Batgirl Movie

After lending his talents to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon made the jump to DC Extended Universe by writing new scenes for Justice League and overseeing the movie's post-production and reshoots after Zack Snyder departed. But before that happened, Whedon was already set to write and direct a Batgirl movie, but he has just announced that he's leaving that project due to story troubles. The creative mind said in a statement:

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story. I'm grateful to Geoff [Johns] and Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I... uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed'?

Joss Whedon announced his exit from Batgirl to THR, saying that while he was eager to work on Barabra Gordon's standalone adventure, ultimately he just wasn't able to come up with a compelling tale. It was announced in March 2017 that Whedon was working on Batgirl, but after nearly a full year, he was unable to "crack the code" of what a Batgirl movie should be. Another issue that reportedly popped up was the possible public scrutiny that might have emerged from Whedon, a white man, overseeing Batgirl given the character's "feminist importance," similar to what likely would have happened if a white director had helmed Black Panther. Last June also saw the release of the Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman, which was met with critical acclaim and became a cultural phenomenon. With Batgirl being one of DC's most popular superheroines, Warner Bros undoubtedly wants her upcoming movie to be handled as properly as possible.

After Justice League's release last November, it was rumored that Warner Bros had let Joss Whedon go from Batgirl following the fifth DCEU movie's underwhelming critical and commercial performance. That rumor was later debunked, but months later, now we know for certain that Whedon's time with Batgirl is over. Aside from Whedon's Batgirl movie supposedly being inspired by Gail Simone's New 52 Batgirl comic book run as a "starting point," few details emerged about the project's development. It's unclear if despite no longer working on Batgirl, Whedon will still be considered for other DC movies, but given his extensive body of work, I suspect he won't have trouble finding a new creative endeavor.

It was reported earlier this week that Batgirl is one of the DC movies that will likely be immediately released after Wonder Woman 2, but with Joss Whedon's departure, we'll have to wait and see if that remains the plan or if Warner Bros and DC will delay it so that there's more time to find a new creative mind to bring it to life. Batgirl was last seen in a live action theatrical setting being played by Alicia Silverstone in 1997's Batman & Robin, while Rosario Dawson voiced the character for last year's The LEGO Batman Movie.

Aquaman 2 Just Took Another Big Step Forward

Prior to last December, there were some big question marks surrounding the potential box office success of James Wan's Aquaman, but the blockbuster wound up blowing all expectations out of the water. Despite a crazy amount of competition, the film blew audiences away worldwide, and is now the biggest DC Comics adaptation of all time. As a result, few were surprised when it was revealed that an Aquaman 2 is in the works, and now the project has apparently hired David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to pen the screenplay.

The Wrap is reporting this latest development from the making of Aquaman 2, noting that the screenwriter was one of three who worked on the script for the first Aquaman - including Will Beall and Geoff Johns. As you probably could have guessed, there aren't currently any details available regarding what the sequel will be about, and it is not yet clear if James Wan is going to return to the helm. Wan is, however, serving as a producer on the project along with Aquaman/Shazam! producer Peter Safran.

Those who are familiar with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick's work will perfectly understand why Warner Bros. made this move - on beyond the critical and box office success of the first Aquaman. Not only does the screenwriter have a successful history with Warner Bros. that goes beyond the superhero realm, he also has a history with James Wan. The two filmmakers first paired up for 2016's The Conjuring 2, and he has also written the script for the upcoming The Conjuring 3 - which Wan is set to produce.

Warner Bros. has not yet announced when they plan on releasing Aquaman 2, but it will likely be a few years from now as they have a nice slate for DC projects lined up between now and the end of summer 2021. The only DCEU title that's being released in 2019 is David F. Sandberg's Shazam! in April, but we also have Todd Phillips' Joker arriving in October; Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) coming in February 2020; Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984 scheduled for June 2020; Matt Reeves' The Batman penciled in for June 2021; and James Gunn's The Suicide Squad on the docket for August 2021.

There are, of course, plenty of directions for Aquaman 2 to go in with its story just based on what happened at the end of the first movie and in the mid-credits sequence. For starters, Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) is now the ruler of Atlantis, and will have to deal with all of the pressures that come with that role. Also, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) has found a new ally in the Atlantis-obsessed scientist Dr. Stephen Shin (Randall Park), and their intelligence combined could create some serious issues for the underwater monarch.

There's a good chance we will be hearing a lot more about Aquaman 2 in the coming months - and one could even probably place a safe bet right now that we will hear at least some kind of significant rumblings about the project at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. From the minute The Phantom Menace started, we knew that the Star Wars prequel trilogy would eventually show us how the Galactic Empire rose to power. That time finally came in Revenge of the Sith, as after Mace Windu failed to kill Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker willingly became the chancellor's Sith apprentice, Palptaine, a.k.a. Darth Sidious, ordered the execution of Order 66. Across a galaxy far, far away, Jedi were eliminated by clone troopers, and Anakin oversaw the killing of younglings at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. It was a depressing moment in the Star Wars saga, but according to Palpatine's actor, Ian McDiarmid, the sequence could have been darker. As McDiarmid put it:

I think it was a little more gruesome than you ended up seeing, you know. A lot of young potential Jedi ended up on the cutting room floor.

Ian McDiarmid didn't provide any specifics regarding how Revenge of the Sith's Order 66 sequence was originally conceived during his appearance at the FanX convention in Salt Lake City this past weekend (via Comicbook.com), but the actor did note that it was "probably a good idea" that aspect of the movie was toned down. Revenge of the Sith was already breaking ground by being the first PG-13-rated Star Wars movie (which has continued with the Disney era Star Wars movies), but had Order 66 been fully realized, that might have resulted in the movie coming close to or even scoring an R rating, which is not a good thing when you're trying to get viewers young viewers into seats. So yeah, not including more shots of young Padawans being gunned or sliced down was probably for the best.

Although a scattering of Jedi managed to survive Order 66, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda among them, the newly-titled Emperor Palpatine was nonetheless successful in not just destroying the Jedi Order, but also painting the knights as traitors to the public. Most of the Order 66 sequence in Revenge of the Sith showed the clone troopers eliminating their former commanders, and all we saw of Anakin... sorry, Darth Vader's part in the devastation was him igniting his lightsaber in the High Council Chamber where numerous younglings were hiding and a hologram recording showing him dueling Cin Drallig and his apprentices. While each Star Wars movie has its dark moments, Revenge of the Sith is arguably the darkest chapter in the saga, and Order 66 played a large part with that... although seeing a man lose nearly all his limbs and be horribly burned on a lava planet brought it home.
