Star Wars J.J. Abrams Shares First Photo From The Set Of Episode IX

There's no franchise quite as popular as Star Wars. Starting decades ago, George Lucas' colorful world has been passed down across generations, resulting in a massive pool of devoted fans to the galaxy far, far away. So when J.J. Abrams and Disney brought back the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it broke box office records and help inspire a new trilogy to complete the Skywalker legacy. Abrams is back to direct Episode IX, wrapping up stories and characters he originally introduced. The director/producer just shared the first image on set, and it's cryptic and exciting. Check it out.

Does anyone else have chills? This new image, however out of focus, proves that Episode IX has officially begun production. And considering how high the stakes are in the wake of The Last Jedi, there's a ton to explore in this final installment in the main Star Wars franchise.

The above image is mostly focused on the camera recording the image, but it also features some awesome Star Wars iconography in the background. If you look closely, it seems that Abrams is filming a scene from within the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. This is a common setting for the beloved space opera, so most fans will easily be able to make up the Falcon's cockpit in this first photo.

Not just an empty set, there are two actors filming within the iconic ship. Unfortunately, only one character is clearly visible: John Boyega's Finn. Finn is one of the trio of new heroes created by J.J. Abrams, and he's had a trial by fire in The Resistance. If Episode IX has a time gap after The Last Jedi, then it should be interesting to see how he's continued to fight against the First Order. Has he become a Han Solo, thrown into heroics before going above and beyond? We'll just have to wait and see.

Regardless of the film's mystery plot, J.J. Abrams' first set photo of Episode IX also shows that Finn finally found a new outfit. The former Stormtrooper spent his first two films rocking basics and Poe Dameron's jacket, but he's got new duds in the above image. Instead he's rocking a sweet vest combo-- once again reminiscent of Harrison Ford's Han Solo.

As far as whose next to John Boyega, smart money says its Daisy Ridley's Rey. Rey is the owner of the Millennium Falcon now, and she's not going to give Han's ship over easily. Finn and Rey spent the entirety of The Last Jedi separated, before finally coming together in the film's final moments. With J.J. Abrams back in the director chair, smart money says Finn and Rey's relationship will once again become a focus of the narrative.

This fall, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will take audiences back to the Wizarding World, introduce us to a young Albus Dumbledore and, at long last, return us to Hogwarts. The sequel film will once again be directed by David Yates and scripted by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. After the credits roll on that film, we'll have a two-year wait until the next chapter in the Fantastic Beasts pentalogy hits theater screens. Ensuring that the third film arrives on time just like the Hogwarts Express, J.K. Rowling is already working on the screenplay. The author confirmed her current projects, including Fantastic Beasts 3, saying:

I've just finished the fourth Galbraith novel, Lethal White, and I'm now writing the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts 3. After that I'll be writing another book for children. I've been playing with the (non-Harry Potter/wizarding world) story for about six years, so it's about time I get it down on paper.

Proving her work ethic, immense talents and possible possession of a time turner, J.K. Rowling confirmed on her website that she has just finished a novel and is now working on the Fantastic Beasts 3 screenplay. We knew that Fantastic Beasts 3 was coming, but it is nice to know that the creator of this world is already hard at work crafting the third chapter in this series that is carving out its own identity in the Wizarding World, while also weaving in to the mythology established in the Harry Potter stories.

There is also something cool about J.K. Rowling writing all of the screenplays for the Fantastic Beasts series. The Harry Potter films were adapted from her novels, and the Fantastic Beasts movies are going off of her screenplays, ensuring a continuity of vision for the Wizarding World onscreen. Sure there have been different directors and liberties taken, as well as changes from the source material, but ultimately all of these films, a potential thirteen in total, are all derived from one woman's imagination.

This lets Potterheads know that this isn't someone else's take on J.K. Rowling's story, or something that may or may not adhere to her vision. It is hers through and through. We know that she is a larger plan in mind for the Fantastic Beasts series and considering that this film will involve Dumbledore and Grindelwald, there is no one else I would want telling the histories of these iconic characters.

What's also quite exciting is J.K Rowling's mention of another children's book that she's been playing with for six years. It would be foolish to think she could craft another children's book that would wind up having the same cultural resonance as Harry Potter. But before it was a worldwide phenomenon, multi-billion dollar movie franchise and theme park, Harry Potter was once just a children's book sitting on shelves at a book fair, so it is hard not to be intrigued by such a storyteller tackling something new.

Why The Cloverfield Paradox Was Moved To Netflix, According To A Paramount Exec

Netflix has been ramping up its movies lineup for months, with a mix of movies the subscription streaming service has commissioned alongside a list of movies that the company buys from studios and production companies to be exclusive to the service. A couple of months ago, Netflix put out the surprise release The Cloverfield Paradox, and despite the fun way the movie was briefly marketed before being unleashed right after the Super Bowl ended, it wasn't as well-liked as other movies in the franchise. Recently, Paraount COO Andrew Gumpert explained why the decision was made to release The Cloverfield Paradox via Netflix. He said,

The movie was finished, we all reviewed it together with J.J. and his team. We all decided there were things about it that made us have a pause about its commercial playability in the traditional matter.

So, it seems the creative team watched the movie with Paramount and may have decided a movie theater release was not the best fit. Because studios split revenue with movie theaters and needs to be advertised prior to its release, a movie needs to make a certain amount of money in theaters before it even begins to make a profit. Working with Netflix helped negate some of those issues. First and foremost, Netflix gave Paramount a chunk of money upfront. Secondly, due to Netflix's unique marketing scheme, not a ton of money needed to be spent on advertising. Sure, Netflix chose to take out a couple of Super Bowl ads -- a pricey prospect. However, that pales in comparison to weeks of advertising on buses, billboards, TV and other platforms. It likely seemed to be a win-win deal.

Because Paramount was not confident in The Cloverfield Paradox's monetary value, Andrew Gumpert also said during the UCLA Law School's annual Entertainment Symposium (via Variety) that it all turned out well for everyone. Netflix got a big budget movie that was part of a popular franchise, as well as that aforementioned cool idea for marketing. And Paramount didn't have to bite its fingernails down worrying about whether or not The Cloverfield Paradox was going to make money. According to Gumpert,

There was an ability for us to be fiscally prudent and monetize. For fans of Cloverfield, the fact is many, many more millions of people saw the movie. It's a positive on every level.

We previously heard that J.J. Abrams reportedly thought The Cloverfield Paradox needed some changes prior to its release, and there have been some specific criticisms the movie has gotten about the way its story was constructed. Despite the reviews, a lot of people seem to have watched The Cloverfield Paradox after the Super Bowl and in the days post-release, and 5 million people were estimated to have viewed the movie in the week following release.
