Ruby Rose Swam With Sharks Long Before Agreeing To Star In The Meg

The shark genre will gain a new member this weekend when Jon Turtletaub's The Meg debuts in theaters, and the adaptation of Steve Alten's novel will bring some serious aquatic carnage to the big screen. Star Jason Statham made headlines for actually swimming with sharks to prepare for the film, but it turns out that co-star Ruby Rose already did that decades ago during her time as an Australian surfer. In a recent interview, the Orange is the New Black star told me:

I had already done that. Just being Australian and surfing and growing up kind of in the ocean. This is twenty-something years ago when we did see sharks, but the idea of them attacking was a lot less frequent. They weren't as hungry. There was more food. There's been some changes in the ocean and I feel like that's why they're getting desperate and they're coming closer to the shores and things like that.

So, if you were a surfer in Australia two decades ago, then seeing sharks simply went with the territory. However, as Ruby Rose explained in our chat, seeing them was apparently less dangerous because there was a greater abundance of food for them, which meant that they would not go after humans quite as often. Nevertheless, even with that excuse, I think it is safe to say that it takes some serious gut to get in the water with sharks, regardless of how much food they have.

Of course, Rainn Wilson apparently had his own way to prepare for The Meg ahead of taking on his role as Jack Morris. Building off of what Ruby Rose said about sharks, The Office alum said:

I prepared by watching Jason Statham movies.

As previously mentioned, the movie is based on a book written by Steve Alten, with National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub behind the camera.

Alita Reviews Are Up, Here's What Critics Are Saying

Alita: Battle Angel had a long road to theaters, but the battle is almost over. The film was co-written and co-produced by James Cameron, and directed by Robert Rodriguez. Alita stars Rosa Salazar in the lead role, with star-studded backup from Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Michelle Rodriguez. Alita has now screened for critics, ahead of its Valentine's Day release, and the response has been very mixed.

CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes was a big fan of Alita: Battle Angel, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars. He noted in his review that the film lays a foundation to further explore this world, and he hopes that happens:

In the current market, it's not hard to find a potential franchise starter, or big-budget eye candy, at any given moment in theaters. And yet, Alita: Battle Angel feels like it's put its best foot forward. The love for the world being crafted by Robert Rodriguez and his collaborators can truly be felt throughout this entire film. No corners are cut, no shortcuts are taken, and if something feels unexplored, it's because it's being saved for the sequels that totally need to happen.

Karen Han of Polygon was also a fan, although she pointed out some shortcomings:

Absolutely everything about Alita: Battle Angel is unapologetically outsized there is interplanetary war, there is a sport called motorball thats basically jai alai with robots, there are slo-mo shots of objects of varying degrees of deadliness flying out of the screen and its delightful. [...] That the story isnt particularly interesting is occasionally a drag, but, again, thats not the point here. Sure, each character only gets one defining characteristic (Alita loves to fight, Ido loves to be a dad, Hugo loves Alita, etc.), but its enough. Alita: Battle Angel is pure visual spectacle; its not trying to be anything more than it is.

Michael Nordine of IndieWire gave Alita: Battle Angel a B+, praising the sci-fi epic as Robert Rodriguez's best movie since Sin City:

Alita: Battle Angel is his best film since he brought Frank Millers graphic novel to the screen, a sci-fi epic that does something rare in an age of endless adaptations and reboots: lives up to its potential while leaving you wanting more.

Molly Freeman of ScreenRant gave Alita 3.5 stars out of 5. She pointed out issues with the story and clunky dialogue, while recognizing that the true star of the film is the visuals:

All in all, Alita: Battle Angel is a must-see for anyone wanting to check out stunning filmmaking in theaters before they run the risk of missing out on the next Avatar-style spectacle. It remains to be seen whether Alita: Battle Angel has even a chance of reaching the heights of success as Avatar, but given the wide world introduced in Rodriguez's movie, hopefully it's successful enough to warrant a sequel. As we've seen from other franchises that have introduced heroes with an origin story film then found greater success once the heroes' stories are truly allowed to flourish, Alita: Battle Angel sets the stage for even more compelling and visually beautiful filmmaking to come.

That perceived focus on the films to come irritated Dan Murrell of Screen Junkies, who gave Alita 4.5 stars out of 10:

I am so tired of a movie coming out that is about the seven other movies that they're going to make after this movie.

Matt Maytum of Total Film was also unimpressed, giving the film 2 stars out of 5:

This is a grim, frequently violent world, but its also very, very silly, and Rodriguez might have fared better had he pushed it further in one direction or the other. Only Ali gets to have some fun, as a baddie whos the mouthpiece for a bigger, off-screen villain. From the cyborg aggressors that look like overdesigned video game bosses (led by an unrecognisable Jackie Earle Haley), to the ripe dialogue and not particularly compelling romance, there are frequent unintentional laughs. Throw in a few distracting cameos, and the result is an extremely bizarre mishmash that seems desperate to set itself up for a sequel, even though its hard to imagine anyone wanting to spend much more time in this world.

Overall, some critics were excited by Alita's debut and eager to see more of this world while others were frustrated that the film seemed to exist to set up more story ahead.

The 91st Academy Awards are airing on ABC in less than two months, and the annual movies ceremony is still scrambling to get everything in order. it was reported yesterday, a month after Kevin Hart stepped down as host, that the Oscars will not have a host this year, which hasn't been done since 1989. Instead, there will be a rotating lineup of actors introducing segments during the evening, and now there's word that efforts are being made to assemble an Avengers reunion.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a formidable film franchise for years now, but 2018 was its biggest year yet, with the culturally significant Black Panther, the gargantuan Avengers: Infinity War and the amusing Ant-Man and the Wasp. 2019 is set to be another momentous year for the superhero franchise, and according to THR, the Academy Award producers are aiming to capitalize on this by trying to bring in as many notable actors from the Avengers movies. Supposedly several of these actors were asked not to present at the Golden Globes this past weekend in order to ensure that them appearing on the Academy Awards would be a bigger deal.

Needless to say that if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which did not comment on this report) can pull this off, it could result in a ratings boost for this year's Oscars. After all, we've seen Disney use ABC to promote Marvel movies on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Good Morning America numerous times, so it makes sense why it would want to use the Academy Awards in a similar fashion. The awards show benefits from more people tuning in, and with Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home all coming out this year, the extra press can only help Marvel.

The last time a Marvel gathering like this occurred at the Oscars was in 2013, when Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson were all on stage together over half a year after The Avengers came out. But this franchise's ranks have expanded significantly since then, and while it would be ridiculous to think that every major actor will appear at the Academy Awards, it will be interesting to see who is chosen to present alongside the non-MCU stars.

Between the Best Popular Film category debacle and Kevin Hart withdrawing from hosting due to controversial jokes and tweets of his from years past resurfacing, this has certainly been one of the weirdest lead-ups to an Oscars ceremony. We'll find out how the end product looks when the 91st Academy Awards airs on ABC on February 24, so be sure to check in with CinemaBlend as the cinematic festivities unfold.
